Born and raised in the Calgary suburbs on Treaty 7 Territory, Mary dela Torre is a self-taught writer and visual artist. Since 2016, she has made her home on unceded Coast Salish territories between the settlements of Salt Spring Island and Nanaimo, B.C. She uses poetry and long-form prose to discuss and deconstruct her experiences, seeking to reconcile her identity as a settler-canadian of colour with her colonized Filipinx roots. Her upcoming poetry collection Woman of Characters: Stories of My Life Online presents these subjects within the context of temporary, online identities in the information age. The preliminary edition will be available this coming December, and paperback edition set for Spring 2019.
